Taught by Becky Scellato

Becky Scellato - The Quilted Dragon

My love for oriental textiles and crafts began in the 1960's when my father was stationed in the Air Force in Okinawa.  We had a mama-san who came weekly to teach us how to shop in the local markets and cook oriental dishes and also taught me to do bunka, a Japanese punch embroidery.  I had always been a  sewer with an addiction for beautiful fabrics from a very early age, and I felt a real excitement at being taught different hand stitching crafts.  About nine years ago, I learned Sashiko from a Japanese woman and fell in love with the process.  An easy embroidery technique using a running stitch, Sashiko is relaxing, fun, creating and even seems to bring about a sense of peace while stitching.  We opened our shop September 2002, which specializes in oriental fabrics and threads, and Sashiko is one of our specialties.

In addition to numerous quilt guilds around the Puget Sound area, I've taught
sashiko classes at the following:

Pacific NW Needle Arts Guild, Seattle, WA
Needle Arts Guild of Puget Sound, WA
Northwest Quilting Expo, Portland, Oregon
PCM Quilting and Sewing Expo, Reno, Nevada
Rusty Barn Craft and Sewing Expo, Phoenix, Arizona
Camano Island Quilters Guild, Camano Island, WA
Shibori Dragon, Lakewood, WA
Quilters Spring Break, Renton, WA
Puyallup Sewing & Stitching Expo, Puyallup, WA

INTRODUCTION TO SASHIKO

Learn about Sashiko and how to incorporate it into your quilt making, wearable art, or home decoration project. The history of Sashiko, samples, template applications, and Sashiko with beading will also be covered. You will be working on a preprinted sampler in class, but instruction will also be given for making your own designs. When completed, the 12" x 12" sampler can be used as a pillow, wall hanging, or addition to a garment.

2 hour class.  Kit Fee:  $13.00

BEADED SASHIKO EMBROIDERY

Combine traditional Japanese Sashiko embroidery with beads to create an elegant beaded floral embellishment.

In this class you'll be working on a small bag perfect for sewing supplies or cosmetics.  On one side of the bag, you'll be doing the Sashiko stitching using seed beads.  On the other side, you'll pick from a selection of motifs to transfer and stitch using traditional Sashiko stitching.

2 hour class.  Kit Fee:  $20.00

SASHIKO PINCUSHION

This quick and easy pincushion makes the perfect guild project.  Students work on a preprinted piece of Sashiko fabric to learn the basics of this easy stitch.  Stuff the pincushion, add tassels to the corners and it's done!  We'll talk about the history of Sashiko and look at samples while you finish your project.

1 hour class.  Kit Fee:  $5.00

SASHIKO TABLE RUNNER or PLACEMAT

In this class students will pick from a variety of Sashiko motifs and learn how to transfer them onto their fabric for a table runner or placemat.  Most if not all of the Sashiko stitching will be finished in class depending on how many designs you add to your project!  We'll talk about the history of Sashiko and look at samples while you finish your project.

4 hour class.  Materials list provided.

SASHIKO AND BEYOND
