made of the same fabric or a complementary decorative fabric.

Japanese Michiyuki - # 143 - $16.95
This three-quarter length kimono-style jacket was worn for
extra warmth and/or protection while out and about. Its low, square neckline
was designed to attractively frame the overlapping neckbands of the kimono
and under-kimono worn underneath. Wear it as a dressy overcoat, casual
coat-dress, and artist's or work smock, perfect for studio or garden tasks.
Lengthened and made out of water-repellent fabric, it also functions as a
raincoat.
The pattern features a double-breasted front opening,
kimono style sleeves that are large enough to fit over a kimono underneath,
narrow neck band with mitered corners, and a handy pocket hidden in the
front seam. Covered buttons are decorative only; snap fasteners attach the
overlapping center front panels, so no buttonholes are needed.
Suggested Fabrics: Drapey fabrics with
body, such as rayon or silk crepe for the outer Michiyuki; lightweight silk
or cotton for the lining. NOTE: The Michiyuki is
typically made from unpatterned fabrics with a woven-in design or texture,
such as brocade. This is so the garment does not clash with the more
elaborate designs of the underlying kimono. However, some Michiyuki fabrics
have all-over designs like small checks or narrow stripes. Satin gives a
more formal, dressy look. Microfibers and treated fabrics are good for a
raincoat.

blouse features a wide band collar, tapered sleeves, and deep underarm
gussets for ease of movement. Pattern includes directions for wrapping and
pleating a companion skirt. Misses Extra Small to Extra Large.

No. 114 - $19.95
This classic jacket in three lengths and with front or
asymmetrical opening is descended from a formal court robe of the Ming
Dynasty (1368-1644). Since then, the garment has been simplified into a
truly versatile design with different options for unusual closures.
Pattern includes heat transfer design for traditional embroidered motifs
and instructions for embroidery. Misses 6-16.
This version on the right of the Chinese Jacket shows how the
choice of fabric can result in a special garment, with having to add any
other embellishment. It is made from two coordinated cross-dyed cottons, in
which the warp or lengthwise threads are solid colors (blue green for the
jacket body and olive green for the neckband) and the weft or crosswise
threads are metallic gold. Combining fabrics is easy, creative, and makes
fabric-shopping a lot of fun.

This wrapped jumper has a centuries-long history in
Tibet. The Chupa features an asymmetrical wrap front, wide neckband, and
simple faced armholes. Both the Chupa and Chupa-inspired skirt have unique
side extensions that wrap around the back to tie in front. The resulting
silhouette is slim, yet the wrapped extensions provide enough leg room to
make walking easy. Misses Extra Small to Extra Large.

No. 134 - $16.95
An exotic mini-wardrobe of a Burmese jacket, Thai wrap
blouse, and Indian choli to wear with a sari. Pattern also gives
instructions for wearing the traditional sarong skirts and sari. Lengthen
the tops for different looks or to showcase luscious fabrics. Instructions
for making three types of knotted frog closures included.
Misses Extra Small to 3X Large.
The summer fashion is the Thai Blouse but instead of sewing the
pattern's long sleeves to the dropped shoulders, the shoulder/sleeve seam
allowance was turned under and tricked out with black rickrack. Since it's a
wrap-and-tie garment, the lightning bolt buttons are purely ornamental…and a
lot of fun. |
