ORIENTAL - SASHIKO
This
quilt was designed for the Shibori Dragon by Carol Maddox. 9” inch finished blocks plus large 18” center block. This Block of the Month will incorporate KONA BAY oriental fabrics, Indigo Kona Cotton, and Sashiko motifs. You will be making the same block each month (Diamond in a Square) but with different oriental fabrics. You will receive a total of 8 blocks that incorporate oriental fabrics, 4 blocks that will incorporate a Sashiko design with oriental fabrics and one large center block that will have a focus area for a large Sashiko design. You can arrange the 12 blocks in the design format shown above or create your own arrangement. The final block will be the large center block with a Sashiko design. You will also receive finishing instructions for assembling the quilt and adding the borders. Sashiko is fun and easy to do and involves a simple running stitch. If you decide you don’t want to do the Sashiko, add your own machine embroidery, appliqué design or leave blank for machine quilting at the end. The large center block would also be a good place to highlight one of your favorite panels or focus fabrics if you decide you don’t want to do the Sashiko stitching. How does it work? All you pay is a one-time fee of $25.00 when you register. You'll receive all the fabrics, pattern and the sashiko instructions you need to do your block each month. You will need to supply the Sashiko thread or pearl cotton to do your sashiko stitching, needle, and a piece of dressmaker’s carbon paper or Saral paper for transferring the design. The kits are ready the first Saturday of each month, so you’ll come in the first Saturday in June to pick up your block kit. Bring the completed quilt block back the first Saturday in July and you’ll receive the next kit. Do I need to attend a meeting to get my block? No – we do not make you attend a meeting. HOWEVER – You must come in and pick up your own block. Our goal is to stay in touch with our customers and for our customers to enjoy working with our fabrics. Please do not send your husband, wife, neighbor, friend, child or pet to pick up your block. If you do not feel you will be able to pick up your own block, please do not sign up. Yes, you can sign up to receive extra blocks. Some folks like to make a larger quilt or give one set as a gift. What if I can’t come in on the first Saturday? That’s okay – we’ll hold the kit for you. We realize that working schedules, illness and vacations sometimes cause scheduling conflicts. However, you must pick up your kit by the end of the month (i.e., June kit no later than June 31st) or your participation will be cancelled. You can rejoin and start back up where you left off by paying $5.00 for each kit you missed to bring you current with the other members. Can I participate in the Block of the Month by mail? We will also be offering the Oriental-Sashiko quilt as a Block of the Month by mail. The cost is a one-time fee of $60.00 which includes all the fabrics, pattern and Sashiko instructions you need to do your block each month plus shipping the kits to you each month. You will need to supply the Sashiko thread or pearl cotton to do your Sashiko stitching, needle and a piece of dressmaker’s carbon paper or Saral paper for transferring the design. The block kits are mailed out the first part of the week following the first Saturday of the month. There are no refunds once the first shipment is mailed. Registration deadline ends May 20, 2008.
